Japan has a screamo band called Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas

Ah, Japan. What a baffling land of head-melting goodness it is. It reminds me of the artistic guy in your class who would be pretty cool if he just stuck to what he was good at and didn't try to pass himself off as the rebellious trouble-maker. Instead of drawing on his own background and skills, he copies another culture down to the last detail and basically becomes a parody of himself.
And so it can be the case with Japan and the U S of A. Don't get me wrong, Japan is scarily far ahead in terms of technology and karate and all that stuff. There's also some great bands like Engrave and some funny bands that are ok like Brain Failure. (No idea if either are from Japan or China or wherever but same difference, am i right?!)

Enter Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas, a trancecore/screamo band from Japan and OMGoth where do I start?

I don't even..I can't...what?!

I tried to make some order to this but they are an assault on the senses! Alright first off - the name. Firstly it is lol just by simply existing as a band name. If I have to explain this then you need to pay more attention to post hardcore/anything-core bands. That's before I talk about DAT COMMA. Did they intentionally say 'fuck you grammar' when they chose it, or was it a ridiculous attempt to distance themselves from crazy ol' Hunter S?

Then there's their sound and videos...

I actually like the first 20 seconds or so of the song. I mean, they are jumping around like overgrown androgynous kids dancing in front of a mirror but it's upbeat, it's fun, I can dig it...and then....

DAT AUTOTUNE

W...T....F.... I'm guessing they set it to 11?! Holy shit. Talk about taking an idea and going with the 'make it more make it better' formula! Why not just have a robot, that would be x10000 times cooler and just as natural sounding. Though I will say when the screams come in I think it works a bit better aaaand they can write/programme a catchy chorus! 1.25 brings some of the best 'get the fuck up!' nu metal style bounce riffing I've heard in a long time and that guy/girl really can scream! Also the little breakdown with the guitar lead over it is kinda sweet.

But let's get back to the comedy!

• Has anyone else noticed that the screamer moves a lot like a certain magician in Arrested Development?

•  I thought 'party by the pool' music videos were meant to have, you know, people? Friends..fans..guilt-tripped girlfriends..

• Flip flops...

I would non-ironically lose my effin' mind to the first half of this song if I was in a club. I think I got a nose bleed about 2.30 though.

Now, I'm sure you're all saying 'this is A grade stuff, but they won't be my new favourite band until I connect with the lyrics.' I hear you! Here is a lyric video.

I'm going to go on record and say I would actually be super into this band if it wasn't for the autotuned lad. The intro is sweet and the heavy bits are nailed down MOSH. But, back to the lyrics. Some highlights include.

• Travelling all four point wherever wind blows
• Do not hold any bag courage is all you need
• There are no choice for you but to go forward
• Things you've never met exist in the world. It's will surely make your journey worthy.

But fie on all my jokes, dat breakdown 2.00. Hooooooly.

I'm actually going to check out some more, but I might need a lie down first. As their last.fm biography says:

Pop music I like: Songs w/rap verse and hooky chorus edition

***disclaimer: I have no clue as to what this genre is, or even if these songs belong to the same genre. All I know is, they are played in nightclubs/on the radio. I'm a complete genre fggt for music I know. Feel free to suggest what this music is/similar songs, thaaanks***

I've noticed lately that most of the songs I like on the radio or in the clizzub follow the same kind of song structure. Basically a simple hip hop/dance beat + rap verse + hook = WIN!

The formula can change slightly as seen in Breaking my Fall by Bressie, which I posted here a while ago, and it has since plagued the radio waves and wrecked heads across Ireland. But I digress.

Here's a song by example that illustrates my point.

• The riff could srsly be used in metalcore
• 00.52 Is that a FILTHY DROP?
• Dem lyrics. As bad/good as Chilli Peppers for just throwing in words that sound good.
• Needs to be covered by a pop punk band. Needs a pop punk jump at 2.20.
• Lol at them trying to come across as srs artists with the black and white vid/crowd/band footage. Y u no make fun alcohol video in tha club?

 Next up is Hangover by Taoi Cruz and ft Flo Rida. Don't know who Taoi Cruz is but ft Flo Rida is in a lot of songs I dig.

• Follows the intro riff and chorus sung over it formula.
• Ok, I'll get it out there now. It's obv but Taoi if u hungover, y u singing so well? y u no croakily asking shop assistants for sausage rolls and energy drinks/ordering takeaway food?
• 00.37 *gap* *snare hit* *riff* EVERY song should have a part like this. For the pop punk jumps.
• The pop industry is really scraping the barrell 4 lyrics. Ehh.. so there's a popular song about looking forward to a good night..a song about partying at present..a song about not wanting the party to be over..wat do? A song about the morning after. BOOM.
• Dat chorus doe. Damn.
• It sounds good I guess but I have NO IDEA what ft Flo Rida is on about. Champagne was in there?
• Rhyming 'Woah' with 'Sure' via 'Sho' = never not cool.

B.O.B. ft Rivers Cuomo - Magic

• Slightly different but at the same time - chorus at the start, then verse, repeat.
•  Dat Bob guy got flow, afaik.
• Mega lol at Rivers acting gangsta, esp. dropping the 'r' in 'floor'. Sure he probably gets the girls but I doubt he hits the flo and I doubt any snapping occurs.
• And srsly, what is he wearing. Did he think rappers still rep adidas?

So I think what I'm saying is - generic, formulaic pop music is great as long as it's the recipe that I like?

Is Nicki Minaj trollin' or what's the shtory?

While I'm usually all for infuritating girls who can't quite sing or rap and do a horrible mix of the two Nicki Minaj has taken it to another level with 'Stupid Hoe'.

Good goth, my ears just vomited. Srsly, what is this atrocity? I've been a recovering pop music rageaholic for a while now and actually like a lot of what I hear on the radio to some of extent but this..thiiiiissss.... I'm sucking rageahol straight from the bottle as if it's oxygen.

• The opening 'wooo, wooo, wooo' aghhhffuuuuuuuu
• Wtf is she even saying?
• English, bitch. Use it. Even internet-speak would be okay.
• 00.48 - 00.58 - Humanity is a disease.
• Dat chorus.

I forced myself to listen to the rest of it. I can see myself telling this story to a pyschiatrist some day.

I had no idea Korn were trying to cash in on dubstep

Late pass for me but when did this happen?! Man, if someone told the teenage me that the whiney bitch of a singer from Korn and the whinier bitch of a singer from From first to Last would work together on a dubstep influenced fggty rock song...well, firstly I would have asked wtf is dubstep and then I would have probably gotten into it. So, bullet dodged there then.

This makes sense in a twisted way, and the ironing will be delicious when both parties hop genres again. Because by the looks of it Korn are, well I don't want to say 'here to stay' for obvs reasons but they don't seem to want to die. Sonny (or Skrillex...ugh..)  on the other hand has already done well off the baffling popularity that screamo had and now has a front seat on the dubstep bandwagon.

• 0.33 - The lads are still super awkward when not playing their open chord dread bang parts.
• Another song about things not being very gooood...
• 1.23 - "I can't wait to rip my eyes out and look at you" - lolwat??
• 2.29 - Shits about to go down...big shhtyle...eh, wait, what do we do here, this is weird offtime dubstep stuff? Jump up and down and shout? I guess....

That was quite the ordeal. I'm wondering why Sonny wasn't in the video, does he have some kind of mystique in dubstep circles where they don't know that he looks like your 15 year old cousin who's going through her emily the strange phase?

Insane Clown Posse get environmental up in this bitch

Like most people I was aware of these ninjas who were put into the same 'outcast' bracket as Slipknot back in the day, but it was only when they released the lolfactory that was Miracles that I truly saw their genius. I follow the lads on twitter and was pretty excited to watch their new video for the song It's All Over!

• Some quality acting in front of the green screen and then one of the best opening lines of all time 'Holy fuck it's hot outside, extra hot!'
• 00.48 - missile get shot overhead and a military helicopter goes by, awww yeahh that's badass ninja!
• The chorus is the most tame, laid back and easy-going piece of music that has every heralded the apocalypse surely? I can see they're going for 'zany' with the scientist guy and nu-metal with the other dude but it's a pop chorus
• 1.19 - (as a building is an inferno in the background) 'It's snowin'..y it not hot outside anymore? It's also hailin' and burnin' up. I'd love if ICP did regular weather updates.
• 1.55 - U uncomfortable being in an ICP vid, bro?
• Around 2.00 there's another list of stuff that are meant to be scary I guess? Fire, Ice, Acid, lightning..Damn nature, you scary!
• 2.23 - Aliens show up...ah now..and here was me thinking they were basing this song on science.
• 2.40 - Oooh a 4.20 reference, keepin' it real to da street.
• 3.20 - Dance moves. There are no words.

It's no miracles but what can ya do?

When I was 13 or 14 this guy who followed the cool kids around made fun of me for not knowing who Limp Bizkit. Ten or so years later and the ironing is delicious.  But The Bizkit were hot property around that time and most people my age went through a phase of liking them. For me they were like Korn, with some wiggers instead of gangly weirdos, Borland excluded.

They released a few more albums, one had ‘the’ at the start of all the songs or something like that, but they were a passing teenage fad. Then my housemate introduced me to Golden Cobra, which he assured me had all the terrible lyrics and catchy choruses of Bizkit of old..

It’s (entirely) possible that people will miss out on some of the lyrical gems in this album, so I’m going to put some up each week. They’re cheap lols. I’m macing the advice animal style for this, but I’ve no catchy title for it..

So yes, from the song Douchbag, which I’ll be returning to comes the brilliant ‘you just cryin’ cos you aint got milk, got nothin’ to spill’. Deep burn. Ah Deep Burn Durst, that’ll work? Or Douche Chill Durst...
