Dodgy Film Club: House of the Dead

Ok to start with, this was the first film we watched after the lolfactory that was The Room, nothing was going to stack up against that. Even so, this falls on the side of bad, instead of so bad it's funny, though there were a few bits that made it fit into the amazing/dodgy category. The film is based on a computer game and to prove to the nerds who liked the game (I'm presuming) the film makers decided to splice game footage in at different points. Cool idea but the graphics are laughable and this happens way too much. The plot is simple enough, there's an island, there's a group of teenagers/twenty somethings played by twenty and thirty somethings, who are ethnically diverse, and there's a bananas amount of zombies who can run, use weapons and swim..purists should probably stay away from these all action zombies who are one script rewrite from getting a dance number.

There's not a huge amount of lolgore, we didn't care if the characters lived or not and the obvious fact that the 'matrix' effect was something the makers thought was super necessary for every character during the big fight scene, or simply that it was used as filler is only funny for so long. It does pick up some bonus points for the unexplained parts and the bloopers such as the crazy guy on the boat briefly having a hook for a hand at the start and continuity errors like a semi-clad girl running up the beach who has more clothes on a second later as she goes into the forest.

This was released in 2003 and the ending set it up for a sequel and good goth there was one released in 2009. On the list..

Have you listened to MC Lars?

MC Lars is a college graduate dude who used to be in a pop punk band
and decided to make pop punk and pop culture influenced non offensive,
tongue in cheek white boy hip hop on his laptop. His lyrics are about
the internet, literature (shakespeare in particular), hipsters,
computer games, suburban ‘anarchists’, the environment and other
snippets of social commentary depending on what is trending at time of
writing. If you’re not at least interested in check him out knowing
all this then I fear there’s no hope for you.

To date he has a few albums out, as well as EPs and various other
songs here and there. He has a bucketload of influences and this makes
it hard to pick some songs to give an idea of his sound, as
practically every song is coming from a different genre. But here
goes.

Download This Song

Mixing a sample from a rock song - in this case The Passenger - with programmed drum beats, white boy rapping, a pop punk chorus - in this case the lad from Bowling For Soup - and an internet-related theme, this song pretty much sums up MC Lars. From the start of his career he recognised the power of downloading  and pretty much everything he has done is up for free on Bandcamp.

iGeneration

Slightly more of a hip hop feel with this one, but the chorus can pass for pop punk. Features the line 'hope I die before I get sold' again merging the contemporary trends with laptop programmed beats and giving a nod to rock songs of old. It's catchy as hell too.

Ahab

And here's a song about Moby Dick. Nothing says non offensive college degree guy like referencing literature! It's a well put together song and the Supergrass sample in the chorus is perfect.
It's not Easy being Green

Lyrics about the environment and global warming - check.
Pop punk chorus - check.
Tongue firmly in cheek when it needs to be - check.
And features the line 'I even rap in haikus..WHAT?!', possibly the best and nerdiest rap boast evar.
This Gigantic Robot Kills

A ska-influenced song with lyrics about a robot that kills faux reality tv stars. I'm in love, like.

Hipster Girl

Mocking a section of your fan base/peers at college and making a song that hipsters would probably enjoy otherwise = never not win.

The dude is pretty prolific in terms of songs/online content so if you're interested check him out, he has a new ep up for free download www.mclars.bandcamp.com

Dodgy Film Club: The Room

Oh, hi terrible dialogue!

Where do I even start with this? From the very first line the three of us watching this were laughing so much we had to start the film over again because we were missing lines. This has a terrible script that repeats itself in scenes and dialogue, shocking acting, multiple extended sex scenes (the same footage is used for two 'seperate' scenes), dodgy outdoor backdrops, characters appearing with no back story or introduction, characters popping in and out of scenes offering a few words that do not forward the story in any way...

When I heard the same guy funded, wrote, starred in, produced and directed this film (and allegedly funded it by selling leather jackets on the street) I knew I had to watch this, but I wasn't ready for just how dodgy this was. It was exhaustingly funny. We've made a drinking game out of some of the quirks/repeated lines that I'll post up soon.

You can expect:
  • ACTION
  • ROMANCE
  • THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS
  • BETRAYAL
  • OH HI MARK
  • ANGER
  • SEX
  • PARTIES
  • AMERICAN FOOTBALL

This film has it all.

Dodgy Film Club

Myself and a friend have unwittingly started a tradition watching films that are amazing and/or dodgy in equal measure. I've always loved over the top horrors where the gore is redonkulous and makes you lol as much as it makes you feel sick. So I'm seeking out dodgy films and keeping a record of them here. Sure why not.

Piranha 3D

Not the most amazing to start with, but Piranha 3D was my first horror film in 3D and still has a good bit of lolgore, one of the best bits (which is shown in the trailer so not a spoiler, even though the plot is, well..) is when a girl gets devoured from the ass up. It's basically a modern Jaws at spring break There's some decently big names in this too, so keep an eye out.

Hobo With a Shotgun

The plot of this is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. There's some brilliantly funny gore bits and genuine lols throughout by way of stereotypes and one-liners. Watched this with a few people and not all of them enjoyed the gore (especially the ending!) but this is pretty fantastic in a brain dead way. The version we had wasn't really low volume-wise so we definetely missed some good lines and I want to watch this again in the near future.

Rubber

This is a bit of an odd one in that it's a dodgy, low budget horror that celebrates things happening for no reason, yet there's some deeper thinking at times. There is an audience in the film watching this mischevious, psycho tyre on it's journey, and they react in much the same way the actual audience in the cinema does; wanting the opening sequences too hurry up a bit and get the real action started etc. It has long spells where nothing much is happening though and I don't think that it's a result of the film maker being clever. But who knows. Definetely worth a watch.

Planet Terror

I genuinely love this and have no shame in saying I own it on DVD. The perfect mix of over the top action, dark comedy, gore that makes you recoil then laugh and just a film maker having fun with an idea. As with most of these films you leave your brain at the door, lest it be eaten, but this actually has a big budget behind it so there are cooler guns, better looking beures and some big name actors as well. The main character has a machine gun/rocket launcher combo for a leg. What more do you need to know, like?
