Either Latin For Truth thought my blogpost was srs or they’re trolling me...

So my satirical ‘tr00 pop punk’ kid preview of the new Latin For Truth EP (via reading too much Stuff You Will Hate) ended up on their Facebook and Twitter.. Was it that I went ‘full retard’ on it and no-one got the sarcasm or are the LFT guys trolling me right back and calling my bluff?!

TROLLOLOL at the 'pop punk is srs' line getting a like!

Either way it goes to show that making fun of bands you like on the internet gets you places!

I am actually looking forward to the EP, and if any of the lads in the band want to send me on a copy to review I’d only be too happy to do so! I’ll accept it in any format except vinyl and there’s no need to send the poetry book, I’m grand on that front.

Check out the band at www.facebook.com/latinfortruth

The Room Drinking Game

The Room is a masterpiece. Drinking games are fun. How could this possibli go wrong? Attempt at your own risk y'all.

Edit: Having tried this, you might wanna cut out the 'awkward laugh' rule..all of his laughs are technically awkward, right?
I'm tired, I'm wasted... I love you, darling!

Latin For Truth lead the pop punk revolution, releasing an acoustic ep with free poetry book!

Think back ten years ago to 2002... Blink 182 had released 'Take Off Your Pants And Jacket', picking up awards from Nickelodeon, having lots of fun annoying 'real' punx and possibly the occasional conservative, worried mother, and presumably sleeping on beds made from dollar bills funded by their silly, sugary melodic songs.

New Found Glory meanwhile were getting ready to release 'Sticks And Stones', an album that would bring their 'funny' fat bassist, occasional good looks, dyed hair and zany antics into the main stream, where they would have a good time pogoing around stages on the back of songs with lyrics about girls and friends for several more albums.

Thankfully pop punk has evolved from this dark place and is now a genre where serious musicians, with actual ability, who are more than a haircut and a cheeky smile, can flourish and touch kids across the world with their healing, honest lyrics that come from the heart.

Latin For Truth already had a great, artsy name but they fell into the trap of being a 'faster' Four Year Strong until now. In a huge leap forward for them and the pop punk genre they're releasing an entire EP of acoustic songs!! Will this trend of pop punk bands recording acoustic songs continue? Hopefully!

And that's not even the best part! With the release is a book of poetry! For years I've thought pop punk lyrics were poetry to me and now maybe the rest of the world can see that too. Finally pop punk can be taken seriously, the way it's meant to be.

I love this Frenzal Rhomb video..and the song is good too

Frenzal Rhomb have always been in the 'also ran' category of epifat skatepunk. I\ve always been aware of them, I've even heard some of their songs but for some reason they always kind of passed me by...until now!

Yes, in exciting news for this blog, I have remembered I like punk music and I'm currently blasting this on repeat. Not even sure if this is an official video, but I love the animation and the general slightly manic nature of the video in general. A short, catchy song with 3 (or more?) choruses and a silly cartoon video that looks like Bob's Burgers shtyle? I'M THERE.

Pop Music I Like: Marina and the Diamonds: Hollywood

I'd forgotten all about this song until I heard it in the car earlier. This goes beyond me just liking dancey pop songs by dumb girls who smell like vodka and desperation. It isn't a club song but I really like it.

For some reason her vocal style reminds me of Daron and/or Serj from System of a Down. That might seem mental but....

  • Non american accents but good use of english language, metaphors etc
  • Dipping in and out of accents/tone of voice to bring home a point/use sarcasm - the 'oh my gawd' line isn't far from the kind of satire SOAD use
  • The American/Hollywood theme/lyrics
  • Dat 'man in drag singing karaoke'/sexually ambiguous style at the start of the verse is what Daron goes for sometimes..see She's Like Heroin
Does anyone else see the crossover appeal? Just me?

Walk off the Earth are stupidly good

So unless you've been living in China or somewhere you will have heard Somebody That I Used to Know by Walk off the Earth, which has exploded via novelty viral video and super-talented  vocals and teamwork. I may be unfashionably late to this party but my girlfriend has been delving into their other stuff and it all seems pretty bitchin'.

So here's a cover of Magic by B.O.B., which is a choon by itself btw.

Some points though...

  • I preferred the long haired guy when he was playing the socially awkward, fggty upset guy in the other video.
  • Srsly what is he wearing on his head, is he actually a wigger?
  • Clearly there's studio 'trickery' going on. Or does everyone know that? I'd love to think they pulled this off in one take but unless they're looping their own vox as they go along...hmmm..
  • I actually love the choreographed instrument change/throws...
  • Super jelly of their setup tbh.
And look, look, they know their memes! Nerds will inherit the earth....

So yeah, they're all over the jewtube.

Bressie goes loveable urban rogue in a 90s pop band vs owl city

AKA pop music I think I like..

Bressie is a dude who used to be in a band called The Blizzards and now has a pop album out. He also provides advice and mentoring on a talent show for some reason. Anyway his new single 'Breaking My Fall' is a bit of a puzzle for me.. It combines 'teenage matters really matter' lyrics, redonk rapping that's as far away from Easy-E and the lads as you possibly could get and a chorus that you know every goddamn gaggle of teenage girls down the back of the bus will sing constantly.

The puzzle clearly is working out if I like it or love it. It's so non offensive, my goth. It sounds like 5ive or S Club 7 mixed with the owl city fggt (fireflies is a choon btw). That or 'You only get what you give' choon that was, yes you guessed it, a choon. The main thing to remember is that it's fun and not Adele whining on about some cake she left on a behind in a cafe or whatever she sings about.

Some band called Big Fish do an MC Lars cover at their high school talent show

When I saw that a high school band covered 'This Gigantic Robot Kills' by MC Lars with full brass section my ska/dork/troll sense went into overdrive! Then I clicked into the video and immediately knew it was going to exceed all my expectations!

Firstly naming your 3rd wave ska band Big Fish...srsly guyz? (I'm assuming they're a ska band..even so performing a ska cover with that name is damning evidence) What were the other suggestions you came up with while scribbling logos on your diary in maths class, More Than Jake? The Sublime Specials? And more importantly, are Reel Big Fish now the inspiration to a new generation of garage ska bands? Don't get me wrong, Sell Out was a tune (IN 1998) and Beer is my jam but even so..I'm not sure I want to live in a world where kids look up to RBF.

Then the video itself is a production line of Teenage Garage Band lols.

  • Practice/Combo amps!
  • The singer is the best example of a 'that guyyyy' that I've seen in quite a while. Yo brah, Saved by the Bell want their look back! Wanted him to be more of a douche but even so.
  • You can't see the drummer properly thanks to that guyyyy
  • Dem chorus vox..jello biafra much?
  • Dat solo...
  • Those hilarrriiious sunglasses..
  • The fact that the bassist wears regular glasses. OMGoth. I feel your pain dude. But on the plus side when you look back on this you'll look slightly less like a douchebag.

Lettuce be srs though, I'd be delighted to have access to a brass section and 6 other dudes who know MC Lars now, nevermind in my teens. And they get cheers at the end so maybe they won't get beat up, and some of them might even get the girl.
